Originally set up in a temporary campus in the Sarai Rohilla area, NIT Delhi moved to its permanent campus in Narela, Delhi, in 2015.

Since its establishment, NIT Delhi has been functioning as a National Institute of Technology (NIT) under the NIT Act 2007, which grants it academic, financial, and administrative autonomy while ensuring that the institute follows the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Education.
