Established in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (also known as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai) is the first public college to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. In 1961, it was declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India. It has also been declared a ‘Deemed University‘ and is autonomous in nature.

IIT Bombay has been ranked 3 under the ‘Overall‘ and ‘Engineering‘ categories by the NIRF Ranking 2024. Also, the institute has been ranked 2 by India Today 2023 under the Engineering category, and 2 by India Today 2023 under the Engineering (Government) category.

Internationally, IIT Bombay is ranked 118 by the QS World University Rankings 2025 under the ‘World University’ category. IIT Bombay offers degree and dual degree programmes at the UG, PG and doctorate levels. The institute offers 80+ courses under 16 departments in the stream of Engineering, Technology, Science and Management. The applicants are chosen through national-level tests conducted by various authorities, such as JEE Advanced, GATE, etc.

With a lifespan of more than 60 years, IITB campus has grown to include 16 departments, 30+ centres and three schools to offer more than 80 courses in the stream of Engineering and Technology, Science and Management at UG, PG and doctoral levels. Much like other IITs, the flagship course of IIT Bombay is BTech with a total intake of 1,558 students. A few of the important highlights regarding IITB are mentioned in the table below:

History of IIT Bombay:

  • In 1958, IIT Bombay was established as part of a government initiative inspired by recommendations from a committee led by Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar
  • IIT Bombay’s campus covers 200 hectares in Powai, Mumbai. It received significant support from UNESCO and the government of the USSR, with equipment, experts, and fellowships facilitating its growth.
  • While the construction of IITB was being completed, the first academic session of the institute opened in July 1958, in its temporary campus at the Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) building in Worli with around 100 students.
  • In 1961, an Act of Parliament granted IIT Bombay the status of an institution of national importance, allowing it to confer its own degrees and diplomas.
  • In July, 2018, IIT Bombay was conferred the status of Institute of Eminence by the Ministry of Human Resources & Development, along with 5 other institutes in the country
  • Faculty members of IIT-Bhave received prestigious awards, including the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar and Padma honours
