Background and History
The Marris College of Music was founded in 1926 by Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, one of the most influential musicologists in India. It started out as a way to organize and plan the study of Indian classical music. In 2000, it became a state university and was named Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University. As part of efforts to expand its reach and influence in performing arts education, it became Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, a full-fledged state university.
