Motto of the Public Music and Performing Arts University: Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, formerly known as Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University, is a premier institution devoted to the study of Indian classical music and the performing arts. Its motto is “Culture Protects Those Who Protect It.” The university, which is named for the well-known musicologist Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, has a long history of supporting and promoting traditional Indian performing arts like dance and classical music. Background and History

The Marris College of Music was founded in 1926 by Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, one of the most influential musicologists in India. It started out as a way to organize and plan the study of Indian classical music. In 2000, it became a state university and was named Bhatkhande Music Institute Deemed University. As part of efforts to expand its reach and influence in performing arts education, it became Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, a full-fledged state university.
